On Friday morning, July 25th, a small but mighty group of local business owners, creatives, and community champions gathered for our latest Rotary Networking Morning—and what a buzzing session it was! From inspiring updates to exciting new ventures, the morning was a brilliant reminder of the power of connection and shared purpose.
Kicking Off with Purpose
Our host Marina Sabolova warmly welcomed everyone and set the tone for a relaxed yet purposeful morning. With a mix of familiar faces and newcomers in the room, it didn’t take long for meaningful conversations to spark.
What Is Rotary?
We heard a passionate summary from Jim Currie and Jonquil Brooks about Rotary’s mission: service above self. From volunteering and project collaboration to corporate memberships, we were reminded how Rotary builds bridges across communities and professions to make a lasting difference—locally and globally.
Charity of the Year – Portishead Youth & Community Centre
Kris Moody, a trustee of the Portishead Youth & Community Centre, shared an inspiring overview of their work with young people and families. With a clear call for funding and support, it was a heartfelt reminder of why this charity is our focus for the year—and how we can all help.
Local Environment – The Bag Initiative
Jason Sharpe updated us on The Bag Initiative, which encourages people to carry a reusable bag and pick up litter while out and about. A small act with a big impact. Members shared uplifting stories about how they’re already taking part—proving that positive change can start with simple habits.
Schools Involvement
Jane York gave a thoughtful update on her work with local schools. From mentoring to new educational outreach efforts, she highlighted the growing need to support young people with encouragement, opportunity, and collaboration.
Spotlight on Local Art – Nicola’s Projects
Nicola King, a talented local artist, spoke about her projects including Nicky’s Atelier and an exciting new creative space opening soon in Clevedon. Her passion for using art to build community and enhance well-being left us all inspired.
Meet Dani from Balefire Digital
A new face at the table, Dani Elliott-Booth, founder of Balefire Digital, introduced his mission to help local businesses improve their online visibility. Dani also shared news of his upcoming initiative: The Fix—a drop-in business clinic offering practical, no-nonsense support for business owners facing everyday challenges. One to watch!
Round-the-Room Introductions
Huge thanks to Rachel Nash, Sally Mulholland, Gary Hughes, Robert Nagle, and Jan Grimshaw and Mark Trenchard for sharing insights about your work and current projects. From mental health and marketing to education and sustainability, the introductions round was filled with passion, purpose, and even a few good laughs.
Open Networking Time
We wrapped up with informal networking over coffee, where ideas flowed and potential collaborations began to take shape. The energy? Uplifting, authentic, and generous—just how we like it.
