Building Community Connections – Gordano Business Rotary Event at Impero Lounge

On Friday 27th June, the Gordano Business Rotary hosted a lively and inspiring event at Impero Lounge in Portishead. This gathering brought together local business owners, educators, and community representatives to share ideas, foster partnerships, and strengthen the bonds between local organisations and the wider community.

Welcoming Community at Impero Lounge

The event began with Jack Taylor, Assistant Manager at Impero Lounge, who warmly welcomed us and shared how Impero works to build strong community relationships. His talk reminded us how powerful it can be when local businesses take a genuine interest in the people and organisations around them.

Spotlight on Rotary Corporate Membership

We then turned our attention to the Rotary Corporate Membership scheme, exploring how local businesses can engage more deeply with Rotary values. By becoming Corporate Members, businesses, schools and charities can enhance their social impact, support community initiatives, and provide staff with valuable networking and volunteering opportunities. This short video explains more…

Inspiring Stories from Our Members

We also heard from Tom Nicholls, a representative from Careys, a fixture on Portishead High Street for over half a century, who shared why he joined Gordano Business Rotary. His personal story reflected a shared motivation across our group—to give back and create stronger businesses and a stronger community.

Marina Sabolova, the founder of OK Talk, spoke briefly about her work in mental well-being and community connection, especially through initiatives like Chatty Café and local counselling support. Her business reflects the Rotary spirit of service and care.

Local Insight from the Town Council

Mike Rees from Portishead Town Council, shared insights about the developments and challenges facing our town. His talk sparked discussions about how businesses and the local council can work together to support positive change in Portishead.

Future of Work with Jane Yorke

A highlight of the morning was hearing from Jane Yorke, an experienced teacher and education consultant. Jane collaborates with businesses and schools to bridge the gap between education and the workplace to prepare students for the evolving world of work in a practical, inspiring way. Learn more about Jane's impactful work via her LinkedIn profile.

A Call to Community-Minded Businesses

To round off the event, we heard from Ellie Armstrong and Kelly Harmer from Gordano School, who shared an exciting initiative: Community Partners. Gordano School is inviting local businesses to collaborate on projects that directly support students—from improving facilities and opportunities – a Nature & Nurture Garden for special needs students, a bricklaying facility, further developing the eco-pond - to sponsoring events.

This initiative is a fantastic opportunity for individuals and businesses to:

  • Support local education
  • Enhance their community profile
  • Inspire future generations
